Mission & Purpose

Welcome to Fear of a Black Planner.

This site is intended to be a place where anger, inspiration, and contemplation about structural urban problems come together to spur activism. It also provides a place to unload and discuss the musings of an overburdened mind.

This blog will discuss how we move forward, whether through policy discussion or mobilizing in the streets, to prevent planning and development that undermines minority communities from remaining the norm.

It presents a space and opportunity to discuss how we, as urban planners and activists of color and our allies, can become more effective, informed, and radical agents of change. While all of the voices represented in this blog will not necessarily be people of color, all who are invited will discuss their role in promoting the interests of equity for people of color and other social minorities. Intersectional thinking is an art and practice that professional urban planners have not always been adept at. For that reason, this site will provide a venue at which to contemplate the vital junctions of identity, purpose, and interest, even if it’s uncomfortable, unsettling, or messy.

Just don’t be surprised if I crack a joke.
